How do weight loss tablets work compared to injections?

01

Same ingredients, different method

Both pills work through the same clinical pathway as injectable treatments, reducing appetite and slowing digestion. The Wegovy pill showed around 16.6% average weight loss at its highest dose. Orforglipron showed around 12.4%. Clinically meaningful results, without a needle.

02

No needles, no injection sites

Injectable treatments are self-administered once a week, into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Both pills are swallowed once daily. No injection pen to load, no needle, no rotating injection sites. For anyone who found the injection a barrier, this changes things.

No fridge. No weekly schedule.

Both pills are stored at room temperature and taken daily. No injection pen, no refrigeration, no planning around a weekly dose. Easier to travel with, easier to fit into everyday life.

Which weight loss tablets will be available and how do they compare?

The Wegovy pill (Semaglutide)

Developed by Novo Nordisk, the company behind the injectable Wegovy treatments

The Wegovy pill contains the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection – semaglutide – which works by reducing appetite and supporting long-term weight loss. In clinical trials it showed around 16.6% average weight loss at the highest dose. Individual results may vary.

It is taken once daily, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with up to 120ml of plain water. You must wait 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking other medication, to ensure it is absorbed properly.

Orforglipron (UK brand name to be confirmed)

Developed by Eli Lilly, the company behind the Mounjaro treatments

Orforglipron works in the same way as the Wegovy pill, reducing appetite and supporting long-term weight loss. In clinical trials it showed around 12.4% average weight loss at the highest dose, with particularly strong evidence for maintaining weight loss over time. Individual results may vary.

Unlike the Wegovy pill, it can be taken at any time of day, with or without food or drink, with no waiting period required.

How do weight loss tablets actually work?

01

Mimics GLP-1

It imitates the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) hormone, which is what your body normally releases after eating, to stop food cravings.

Slows digestion

It slows down how quickly your stomach empties, keeping you feeling full and satisfied for much longer after smaller meals.
