How does the Wegovy Pill work?
The Wegovy Pill works by activating GLP-1 receptors in the body. GLP-1 is a hormone your body produces naturally after eating. It signals to your brain that you are full, slows the rate at which your stomach empties and helps regulate blood sugar.
In people living with obesity or excess weight, these signals are often weaker or shorter-lived than they need to be. Semaglutide (the active ingredient in the Wegovy Pill) amplifies them.
The practical effect is that appetite reduces, food feels more satisfying more quickly, and cravings, particularly for calorie-dense foods, can ease over time. Eating less becomes easier, not because of willpower, but because the biology driving hunger is being addressed directly.
What does the clinical evidence show?
The Wegovy Pill has been studied in the OASIS 4 Phase 3 trial: a 64-week clinical trial in adults with obesity or overweight and at least one weight-related health condition. Results showed:
- Average weight loss of 16.6% for participants who followed the dosing routine fully
- Average weight loss of 13.6% regardless of adherence
- One in three fully adherent participants achieved 20% or more weight loss
Individual results will vary. Outcomes depend on how consistently the morning routine is followed, alongside dietary changes and increased activity.
Who is the Wegovy Pill suitable for?
The Wegovy Pill may be suitable for adults with:
- A BMI of 30 or above, or
- A BMI of 27 or above alongside at least one weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnoea, PCOS or cardiovascular disease
Lower BMI thresholds apply for people from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds, where the health risks associated with excess weight typically occur at a lower BMI.
The Wegovy Pill is not suitable for everyone. When it becomes available, your CheqUp Clinician will carry out a full clinical assessment before any prescription is issued.
The Wegovy Pill is not suitable if you:
- Are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to conceive within two months
- Have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or MEN 2
- Have active or a history of pancreatitis
- Have severe kidney impairment (eGFR below 30)
- Have a history of liver cirrhosis
- Are currently taking another GLP-1 treatment
- Are under 18
How to take the Wegovy Pill: the morning routine
Why the routine matters
The Wegovy Pill has a strict absorption requirement that directly affects how well the weight loss tablet works. Getting this right is the single most important thing you can do to get the best results from treatment.
Every morning, before anything else:
Take one tablet with up to 120ml of plain water (roughly half a small glass). Then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything other than water, or taking any other oral medications.
Swallow the tablet whole. Do not break, crush or chew it.
Why: The Wegovy Pill uses an absorption enhancer called SNAC to help semaglutide pass through the stomach lining into the bloodstream. Food, other drinks or other medications present in the stomach disrupt that process significantly. This is the most common reason people feel the weight loss tablet is not working as expected. Often it is not the dose that is the issue. It is the routine.
Building this into your morning before breakfast, before coffee and before other medications is the most reliable way to stay consistent.
Also avoid:
- Taking the tablet with any liquid other than water
- Taking more than one tablet per day
- Breaking, cutting, crushing or chewing the tablet
Wegovy Pill dosing schedule
The Wegovy Pill starts at a low dose and increases gradually over around 12 weeks. This titration period gives your body time to adjust and reduces the likelihood of side effects, particularly nausea.
| Steps | Dose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Step 1: Starter dose | 1.5mg | 30 days |
| Step 2: Step up dose | 4mg | 30 days |
| Step 3: Step up dose | 9mg | 30 days |
| Step 4: Maximum | 25mg | Ongoing |
Each dose increase happens only when the previous dose is well tolerated. If side effects are making things difficult, your CheqUp Clinician may suggest staying at your current dose a little longer before moving up. Do not adjust your dose without speaking to your Clinician first.
What to expect in the first few weeks
Appetite reduction tends to build gradually over the first month as the dose increases rather than arriving all at once. This is normal.
Nausea is the most commonly reported side effect of this weight loss tablet and is most likely in the first few weeks and after each dose step-up. Eating smaller, plainer meals, avoiding rich or fatty foods and staying well hydrated can all help. It usually eases as your body adjusts.
Indigestion tends to be more noticeable with the oral tablet than with the injectable form of semaglutide. If you find it affecting you, there are a few things that can help: peppermint or ginger tea, over-the-counter antacids such as Gaviscon or Rennie, or proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole or esomeprazole. If it remains difficult to manage, speak to your CheqUp Clinician. There are other practical adjustments they can suggest.
Your Health Coach is there from the start to help you build the habits that make the weight loss tablet work well. Do not wait until your next clinical review to raise something. That is what your Health Coach calls are for.
Potential side effects of the Wegovy Pill
Side effects are most common in the first few weeks of taking this weight loss pill and after each dose increase. They tend to ease as your body adjusts. The most common include:
- Nausea
- Constipation or diarrhoea
- Indigestion or heartburn
- Abdominal pain or discomfort
- Headache
- Tiredness
- Burping or flatulence
- Dizziness
Less commonly, some people experience gallbladder issues or acute pancreatitis. If you develop sudden, severe abdominal pain, seek medical attention promptly.
Staying well hydrated is important throughout, particularly if nausea or vomiting is affecting how much you are drinking.
Other medications to be aware of
Because the Wegovy Pill slows gastric emptying, it can affect how quickly your stomach absorbs other medications taken at the same time. If you take any medication where consistent absorption matters, make sure your CheqUp Clinician knows before you start. They will advise on timing.
Oral contraceptives: the Wegovy Pill can affect how well an oral contraceptive pill is absorbed, particularly in the early weeks of treatment and after each dose increase. Speak to your Clinician at your consultation. They will advise on whether to add a barrier method or switch to a non-oral method for that period.
Storing your Wegovy Pill tablets
- Keep tablets in their original blister pack
- Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture
- Do not take a tablet that appears damaged or discoloured. It should be white to light yellow.

Frequently asked questions about the Wegovy Pill
Is the Wegovy Pill the same as the Wegovy injection?
The Wegovy Pill contains the same active ingredient as the Wegovy injection, semaglutide, but in a once-daily oral tablet form. The injection is taken weekly; the Wegovy Pill is taken every morning. Because the route of absorption is different, the tablet requires a strict morning routine to work effectively: taken on an empty stomach with a small amount of water, followed by a 30-minute wait before eating or drinking anything else.
How much weight can you lose with the Wegovy Pill?
The OASIS 4 Phase 3 trial recorded an average weight loss of 16.6% over 64 weeks for participants who followed the dosing routine fully. One in three of those participants achieved 20% or more weight loss. Individual results will vary and depend on how consistently the morning routine is followed, as well as dietary and activity changes.
What if I miss a dose of the Wegovy Pill?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember on the same day. If you only remember the following day, skip it entirely and take your next dose as normal that morning. Do not take two doses on the same day to catch up. If you miss seven or more consecutive doses, speak to your CheqUp Clinician before restarting.
Can I take the Wegovy Pill if I have type 2 diabetes?
Possibly, depending on your current diabetes medication. Your CheqUp Clinician will review your HbA1c levels and current medications at your consultation.
When will the Wegovy Pill be available through CheqUp?
The Wegovy Pill is not yet available in the UK but is coming to CheqUp this summer. It will be the first oral GLP-1 weight loss pill available in the UK. Join the waitlist to be among the first to know when it launches.
