Sleep plays a vital role in both physical health and weight management, so it is understandable to feel concerned if your sleep changes after starting weight loss treatment. While many people sleep well on Mounjaro, some members notice changes to their sleep patterns, particularly in the early stages of treatment.

Why does insomnia happen?

Insomnia can be caused by a wide range of factors, often working together rather than in isolation. External factors include room temperature that is too hot or too cold, an uncomfortable mattress or pillow, noise, or excessive screen use before bed. Internal factors may include stress, anxiety, depression or other mental health conditions, as well as physical health issues such as menopause, chronic pain, restless leg syndrome, thyroid conditions, or neurological conditions.

Certain medications can also affect sleep quality. Changes in routine, eating patterns and hormone levels can all disrupt the body’s natural sleep wake cycle, known as the circadian rhythm (1).

Does Mounjaro cause insomnia?

Insomnia is not listed as a known or common side effect of Mounjaro. However, some people report changes in sleep after starting treatment, particularly during dose increases or early adjustment periods.

There are several theories as to why this may happen. Changes in eating times, portion sizes and increased fluid intake can affect the body clock. Mounjaro also influences hormones and gut hormone signalling, which play a role in appetite, metabolism and energy regulation.

GLP-1 receptors are present in the hypothalamus, an area of the brain involved in regulating sleep and wakefulness. Because Mounjaro acts on these receptors, it may indirectly influence sleep patterns in some individuals, although responses vary widely.

How Mounjaro may impact your sleep

Many people notice no change in sleep at all while taking Mounjaro. Others may experience either improved or disrupted sleep. Hormonal shifts, changes in daily routines and gastrointestinal side effects can all influence sleep quality. Nausea, heartburn, reflux, bloating, diarrhoea or constipation may make it harder to fall or stay asleep, particularly if discomfort leads to frequent waking or nighttime bathroom trips.

These effects are often temporary and tend to improve as the body adapts to treatment.

What sleep changes to expect on Mounjaro

Some people report difficulty falling asleep, waking more often during the night, or feeling restless despite feeling tired. For many, this settles within the first few months of treatment, although it may last longer for some.

Others notice a shift in their body clock, feeling naturally sleepy earlier in the evening and waking earlier in the morning. This change can be neutral or even beneficial, depending on individual routines.

It is also worth noting that weight loss itself can improve sleep. Reduced inflammation, fewer aches and pains, and improved breathing can all contribute to more restful sleep over time.

Can Mounjaro improve sleep quality?

In some cases, Mounjaro may support better sleep in the longer term. The hypothalamus, which helps regulate sleep, also contains GLP-1 receptors. There is some evidence that GLP-1 activity may influence neurotransmitters such as GABA, which helps promote relaxation and sleepiness (2).

Weight loss achieved with Mounjaro has also been shown to improve obesity related conditions that disrupt sleep, particularly obstructive sleep apnoea. Clinical trials, including the SURMOUNT-OSA studies, found that participants taking Mounjaro experienced fewer breathing disruptions per hour, improved oxygen levels during sleep, and reduced severity of sleep apnoea compared to placebo (3).

Although Mounjaro is not currently licensed in the UK specifically to treat obstructive sleep apnoea, these findings highlight how weight loss can positively affect sleep health.

Why good sleep matters for weight loss

Good sleep supports many of the processes that make sustainable weight loss possible.

During sleep, the body regulates hormones involved in metabolism, muscle repair and stress. Poor sleep can disrupt cortisol levels, which may affect mood, energy and fat storage. Sleep deprivation also alters hunger hormones, increasing ghrelin, which drives appetite, and reducing leptin, which signals fullness (4).

When sleep is poor, people are more likely to experience cravings, low energy and increased snacking, particularly for quick sources of energy. Over time, this can make weight loss harder to maintain.

How to manage sleep changes on Mounjaro

If your sleep is affected while taking Mounjaro, there are practical steps that may help.

  • Eat regular, balanced meals or snacks every three to four hours, focusing on protein and nutrient dense foods
  • Avoid large or late evening meals that may disrupt sleep
  • Reduce caffeine intake in the afternoon and evening
  • Limit alcohol before bedtime, as it can reduce deep sleep quality
  • Reduce screen use before bed, including phones, laptops and televisions
  • Create a calming bedtime routine that allows time to unwind
  • Keep your bedroom comfortable, quiet and inviting, with lighting and temperature suited to your preference

These habits support the body’s natural sleep rhythm and can make a meaningful difference over time (5).

When to contact your healthcare provider

If insomnia develops after starting Mounjaro, it is reasonable to allow time for adjustment and focus on supportive sleep habits. If sleep problems persist for several months, or if poor sleep is affecting your mood, concentration or daily functioning, it is important to speak with your GP. They can help explore underlying causes, review your treatment and support your overall sleep health alongside your weight loss journey.
