If weight loss slows down, a clinical review can help assess your treatment, nutrition, protein intake and activity plan so you can restart progress safely.

If your weight loss has slowed while taking medication such as Mounjaro or Wegovy, the safest next step is a clinical review. Your Clinician can assess your current dose, side effects, appetite control and whether dose titration is appropriate.

They may also recommend targeted lifestyle changes like protein-sparing nutritionmacro-recalculation or resistance training to support lean mass preservation, keep metabolic activity higher during weight loss and help restart progress safely.

A weight loss plateau does not always mean the treatment has failed. In many cases, it means your body has adapted to a lower weight, your calorie needs have changed, or your current nutrition and activity plan needs updating.

There is no simple fix. Breaking through a plateau often comes from combining a clinical medication review with nutrition, movement and body composition support. That means protecting muscle, recalculating your food targets and using strength-based exercise to help your metabolism stay active as your weight changes.

Many will be tempted to change their dose based on an unexpected plateau, but all dose changes and recalculations should be done with clinical supervision.

What is a weight loss plateau?

A weight loss plateau is when your weight stays roughly the same for a period of time, even though you are continuing with your treatment, nutrition and activity plan.

At the start of a weight loss journey, weight can drop more quickly. Some early loss may come from your body using stored carbohydrates, known as glycogen, which also releases water.

Over time, as body fat decreases and your overall weight becomes lower, your metabolism may slow compared with where it was at the beginning. This can cause weight loss to slow down or pause.

In simple terms, what worked at the start may not keep working forever. A plateau is best seen as a checkpoint, not a failure.

How can you break a weight loss plateau safely?

Hitting a weight loss plateau can feel frustrating, especially when you have been eating well, moving more and taking your medication as advised.

Plateaus are common and most people experience them at some point during their weight loss journey. The important thing is not to see a plateau as failure. It is usually a sign that your body is adapting, and your plan may need updating.

Weight loss is not a straight line. As your body changes, your strategy often needs to change with it.

Top tips for breaking through a weight loss plateau from Kirsten Davies, Nutritionist and Health Coach at CheqUp:

1. Book a clinical review before changing anything

If your weight loss medication seems to have stopped working, speak to your Clinician before making changes. They can review your current dose, how long you have been taking it, your progress, side effects, appetite control and whether your treatment is still suitable.

For some people, dose titration may be appropriate. This means gradually adjusting the dose under clinical supervision. For others, the better option may be staying on the same dose while improving nutrition, movement and daily habits.

Do not self-adjust weight loss medication such as Wegovy or Mounjaro. Dose changes should always be clinically reviewed and authorised.

2. Recalculate your nutrition needs

As your weight changes, your nutrition needs change too. This is where macro-recalculation can help.

Macro-recalculation means reviewing your protein, carbohydrate and fat intake based on your current weight, activity levels and goals. A plan that worked well at the beginning may now be too high in calories to keep weight moving, or too low in protein to protect muscle.

The aim is not to crash diet. The aim is to recalibrate.

3. Prioritise protein-sparing nutrition

Protein is especially important during a plateau. Protein-sparing nutrition means eating in a way that helps your body lose fat while preserving as much lean muscle as possible.

This matters because lean muscle supports strength, daily function and metabolic activity. If too much lean mass is lost during weight loss, your body may burn fewer calories at rest, making progress harder to restart.

Good protein sources include chicken, fish, eggs, Greek yoghurt, tofu, beans, lentils and protein shakes where appropriate. Many people aim for a portion of protein at each meal, but the right amount depends on your body, health and activity levels.

4. Add resistance training to protect lean mass

Cardio can help with fitness and calorie burn, but resistance training is especially useful during a weight loss plateau because it supports lean mass preservation.

This does not have to mean heavy gym sessions. Bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, squats, lunges, wall press-ups, free weights or short home workouts can all help.

The goal is simple: give your muscles a reason to stay strong while your body loses fat.

5. Increase everyday movement

Exercise sessions matter, but so does the movement you do across the whole day. As people lose weight, they sometimes move less without realising it, which can reduce daily calorie burn.

Try walking between meetings, taking the stairs, adding a short walk after meals, standing regularly during the workday or setting a realistic step target. Small actions can add up when they are consistent.

6. Look beyond the scales

The scales only tell part of the story. Your weight may stay the same while your body composition improves, especially if you are preserving or building lean mass through resistance training.

Track progress through waist measurements, how your clothes fit, progress photos, energy levels, sleep, mood and strength. These signs can show that your plan is still working, even when the scales are slow to move.

7. Review sleep, stress and hydration

Sleep, stress and hydration can all affect appetite, cravings, energy and routine. If these are off track, it can be harder to restart progress.

Aim for consistent sleep, drink enough water and use simple stress-management habits such as short walks, stretching, breathing exercises or time away from screens and always follow guidance from the NHS on how to lose weight.

Quick answers about Mounjaro or Wegovy and weight loss plateaus

What should I do if Mounjaro or Wegovy stops working?

Book a clinical review. Your Clinician can assess your dose, progress, side effects, appetite control, nutrition and whether dose titration is appropriate.

Can increasing my Mounjaro or Wegovy dose restart weight loss?

It may help some people, but only if clinically appropriate and well tolerated. You should not increase your dose without clinical review.

How does protein help during a weight loss plateau?

Protein can support fullness and help preserve lean mass during weight loss. This matters because lean mass supports strength, daily function and metabolic activity. Your ideal protein intake depends on your body, health and activity level.

Is a weight loss plateau normal on Mounjaro or Wegovy?

Yes. Plateaus are common and often happen because your body has adapted to a lower weight and now needs fewer calories than before.
