Keeping your injectable medication safe in hot weather

When the temperature climbs, it’s worth knowing how heat can affect your injectable medication. Both Mounjaro and Wegovy need to be kept cold to stay safe and effective. There are clear guidelines on what to do if your pen has been exposed to warmth, whether that’s during delivery, a hot car journey or a summer heatwave.

Here’s everything you need to know, and what to do if you are ever unsure.

How your injectable medication should normally be stored

Both Mounjaro and Wegovy should be kept in the fridge between 2°C and 8°C until you start using them.

Once a pen is in use, it can be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) for a set period of time:

  • Up to 30 days for Mounjaro
  • Up to 6 weeks for Wegovy multi dose pens

If you are ever unsure about timing or storage, our team can check this with you quickly.

How CheqUp tracks temperature exposure

Our packaging for injectables is designed with ice packs to help keep your medication at the right temperature during transit. As a precaution, we begin tracking heat exposure from the moment your order leaves our pharmacy. That start point matters when we are working out whether your pen has been affected.

If you are unsure whether your medication is still safe to use, the key things to know are:

  • Which medication you have
  • Roughly how long it was outside the fridge
  • What temperatures it may have been exposed to

With those three pieces of information, we can give you a clear answer and take the uncertainty off your shoulders.

A note on receiving your delivery: Where possible, please make sure someone is available to receive your delivery. The sooner it is placed in the fridge after arrival, the lower the risk of any temperature exposure. If that is not possible, we can still help you assess whether everything is okay.

If your Mounjaro pen has been exposed to heat

Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro, has published data on how the medication responds to different temperatures and time periods. Based on that research, here is what it means for you.

If temperatures stayed below 30°C

Highest temperature reachedSafe to store outside fridge forWhat happens if it was out longer?
Up to 25°CUp to 7 daysYour pen is now considered ‘in use’ (see below)
Between 25°C and 30°CUp to 3 days and 12 hoursYour pen is now considered ‘in use’ (see below)

If your pen was out of the fridge for less than the time shown, it is safe to use. Put it back in the fridge in its original carton as soon as you can. Your expiry date (shown on the outer carton) has not changed.

If your pen was out for longer, it is now considered ‘in use’ from the date it left our pharmacy. It is still safe to inject, but it should be kept below 30°C and used within 30 days of your dispatch date. If you are not sure of your dispatch date, we can check this for you quickly.

If your pen was out of the fridge for less than the time shown, it is safe to use. Return it to the fridge in its original carton and your expiry date remains the same.

If it was out longer than the guidance, the heat may have affected the medication. Please do not use it. Take it to your nearest pharmacy for safe disposal and get in touch with our team so we can support you with next steps.

If your Wegovy pen has been exposed to heat

Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy, is still building out temperature stability data. Until we have more detailed guidance, we take a precautionary approach to protect your safety: we treat every Wegovy pen as ‘in use’ from the moment it leaves our pharmacy.

Wegovy multi dose pens (up to 2.4mg)

If your pen has been kept below 30°C at all times, it is safe to use for up to six weeks from your dispatch date.

If your pen reached a temperature above 30°C at any point, we advise you not to use it, even if it was only briefly. Please take it to a pharmacy for safe disposal and contact our team so we can support you with next steps.
