Feeling nervous before your first injection is completely understandable. For many people, it may be the first time using an injectable treatment at home, so questions about the pen, needle, dose and injection technique are common.

The Mounjaro KwikPen is used for a subcutaneous injection, meaning the medicine is injected into the fatty layer just under the skin, rather than into a muscle or vein.

It’s common to inject into areas such as the abdomen or thigh. The upper arm may also be used if someone else is giving the injection. Always follow the instructions provided with your medication and any clinical guidance from your provider.

Before using Mounjaro, always read the patient information leaflet and follow the instructions supplied with your pen. CheqUp members also have access to step-by-step video tutorials and 1:1 Clinician support, helping you feel prepared before your first KwikPen administration.

What should you check before using the Mounjaro KwikPen?

Before each injection, take a few moments to check your medication and prepare your space. Work through these checks before you begin:

  •       Medication and dose – this confirms you are using the right treatment and prescribed dose
  •       Expiry date – do not use medicine that is out of date
  •       Liquid appearance – the liquid should look clear and free from particles. Do not use the pen if the liquid looks cloudy, discoloured or contains particles.
  •       Pen condition – do not use a damaged pen or one stored incorrectly
  •       New needle – use a new needle every time and never share your pen
  •       Sharps bin – dispose of needles safely after use

When should you ask for clinical guidance?

There are several situations where you should ask for clinical guidance. These include if you are unsure how to use your pen, cannot confirm your dose, notice the liquid looks unusual, or think you may have made a mistake during your injection.

You should also seek medical advice if you experience symptoms that worry you after injecting, such as spreading rash, swelling, severe dizziness, breathing difficulty, or symptoms that feel unusual or severe.

Do not take an extra dose or try to correct a possible mistake yourself. Contact your Clinician, pharmacist or CheqUp clinical support team for advice.

Where should you inject Mounjaro?

Mounjaro is injected under the skin, this is a subcutaneous injection.

The most common injection areas are the abdomen, the front of the thigh, or the upper arm if someone else is helping you. Many people find the abdomen or thigh easiest for their first injection because these areas are easier to see and reach.

Rotate injection sites regularly n to avoid skin that is sore, bruised, red, hard, scarred or irritated.

How do you use the Mounjaro KwikPen safely?

Always follow the instructions that come with your pen and the guidance given by your Clinician. Below is a general guide on safe KwikPen administration:

  •       Step 1: Wash your hands properly with soap and water
  •       Step 2: Check the pen and the liquid
  •       Step 3: Attach a new needle, if needed
  •       Step 4: Select your prescribed dose
  •       Step 5: Choose a suitable injection site
  •       Step 6: Inject under the skin and count to 5
  •       Step 7: Dispose of the used needle in a sharps bin

Do not change your dose or injection schedule unless you have been told to by a Clinician.

What can make your first injection feel easier?

Feeling calm and prepared can make a real difference.

Before your first injection, you may find it helpful to watch CheqUp’s step-by-step video tutorial. Reading the patient information leaflet fully will also help you understand the process and feel at ease.

When you are ready to inject, choose a time when you will not be interrupted. Sit comfortably, take a few slow breaths, and keep your instructions nearby.

If anything feels unclear, pause and contact the CheqUp clinical team before continuing.
